Move to unicode internally for all text handling

Developer

I want to

Use unicode (utf-8) for all texts internally

So that

We can:

  1. Support texts in languages other than english
  2. Support non-standard characters in older texts (e.g. Caesar spelt with joined ae in the folio)

Difficult to say when this is totally done but think r65 resolved this (back in November 06).
